Toxicity

Most people address concerns regarding fluoride toxicity from using fluoridated toothpaste as it relates to ingestion of the toxic paste while brushing. Many children, especially young ones, swallow large amounts of the toothpaste used, a serious concern.

However, most experts just presume that the fluoride is ingested. Fluoride is measured before it is given to a child, then again measured in the amount which has been spit out.

Few know that the fluoride from toothpaste (or any other oral product) is rapidly absorbed by the mucous membranes in the mouth, thus immediately entering the blood stream.

In fluoride toothpaste users, especially children in the age group 5–10 years and 10–14 years, even after rinsing their teeth satisfactorily with water, fluoride level in circulation is enhanced within a few minutes (Rajan et al, 1987).
